Move On or Move Up?

You’ve been in your role for a while. You know the ropes. You’ve proved yourself. You’re reliable. Capable. Trusted.

But something’s shifted.

Maybe the learning curve has flattened.

Maybe recognition has stalled.

Maybe the role that once felt like a challenge now feels like a waiting room.

So the big question kicks in:

Do I move on — or move up?

Here’s the truth: both are valid moves. But neither should be made by accident.

Moving on can be powerful. It might be exactly what you need — a fresh environment, a new challenge, a role that stretches you. But leaving too soon (or for the wrong reasons) can simply press reset on problems you haven’t solved yet.

Moving up can be transformational. It can boost your influence, your income, and your confidence. But it requires intention. Visibility. And a willingness to stop playing safe.

So before you decide, ask yourself:

  • Have I outgrown the role — or just the version of me that took it?

  • Have I made my strengths visible — or am I still waiting to be noticed?

  • Is there space to grow here — or have I hit the ceiling?

  • Am I being stretched — or just staying busy?

If you choose to move up, that doesn’t mean waiting for a promotion to fall into your lap. It means stepping forward. Take initiative. Lead projects. Share ideas. Mentor someone. Show you’re ready — don’t wait to be asked.

If you choose to move on, do it like a pro. Don’t run. Reposition. Identify what you want more of. Clarify your non-negotiables. Learn how to package your experience. Make the next move a step forward — not just a step away.

And if you’re not sure?

That’s OK. But don’t stay stuck.

Progression is a mindset. Whether you move on or move up, you need a plan. You need self-awareness. And you need to back yourself — with action, not just thought.

The goal isn’t just to stay employed. The goal is to stay growing.

So… move on or move up?

You already know the answer.

Now it’s time to act on it.
